The Galleria Riccardo Crespi presentsL’ombre de l’autre rive, the second solo exhibition by the French artist Stéphanie Nava.

The show is being staged in collaboration with the Centre Culturel Français of Milan, which will house an installation by the artist in the garden of its seat in Palazzo delle Stelline.

The title, a quotation from Le dernier homme (1957) by the French writer Maurice Blanchot, evokes the idea of the other as a physical place. An other as neighbouring, but still foreign territory: separated by an imaginary river that keeps it irremediably at a distance.

L’ombre de l’autre rive(“The Shadow of the Other Shore”), the other place, close but far away, is perceived visually and concretely in the exhibition space of the gallery, which is traversed by the work Objet de traduction (“Object of Translation”), a long plastic pipe that was originally used for the transfer of wine.

Here it serves to transport images and words: the translation of a vision. Its two mouths are located at the far ends of the gallery – by the window that faces onto the mezzanine and in front of the wall in the basement. The tube connects the view of the street with its representation in a drawing hung on the wall. Two chairs permit visitors to sit at each end and converse, making possible an anonymous meeting made up of voices, thoughts and contemplation.

So for Stéphanie Nava spaces become containers of memories, cross-sections of impossible encounters, in which people and buildings are closely connected with one another.

Thus in the installation Les Caducs, les persistants, les délaisseés (“The Worn Out, the Persistent, the Forsaken”), the artistpresents viewers with a mobile reconstruction of memory, in which they can organize as they like fragmentsof recollections, represented by objects that move along the wall, as if they were pieces of a history to be reinvented: a sort of music track whose appearance can be modified to suit new interpretations.

‘ [...] Just as music scores make music visible, Stéphanie Nava’s work metaphorically represents the incomprehensible process of selection that everyone applies to their own memories. In fact her works represent the complex relationship between physical locations and our obsessions and repressions [...]’. Ilaria Bonacossa
